May came and went without Selkirk’s 1st XI registering a victory. June, however, got off to a splendid start as, at long last, the club found some form to defeat Melrose in the first round of the Muragtroyd National 20/20 Knockout Cup.
Sadly the scorebook offers but an incomplete record of this triumph. Suffice it to say that Green batted 20 overs for his 37, a scoring rate that seems mildly out of keeping with the conventions of the 20/20 format. Nevertheless, without his determined innings the visitors would have struggled to post any kind of competitive score.
As it was Selkirk were charged with keeping their heads as they chased an eminently-achievable total of 90. Batting in beautiful conditions at Philiphaugh, the home side knew that one substantial contribution allied with bits and pieces of chipping in from others would suffice.
The hero of the hour was Bob Wilkinson – pictured above – whose 32 included some lusty pulling and judicious running between the wickets. Everitt and Banks – who hit one lusty six to the Ettrickhaugh Road end, complete with a Caribbean-style follow-through – added useful support, while Paterson, Gardiner and Oliver all contributed their necessary share. Indeed it was Oliver, driving trhough mid on, who smote the winning runs to send Selkirk through to the next round of the competition.
Despite that, however, it was Wilkinson’s hour and his was the match-defining and match-winning innings.
