Kelso Veterans Too Wily (& Too Good) for Selkirk Youths

It is many years, alas, since Selkirk last celebrated a Border League victory at Kelso and Saturday’s expedition to Shedden Park proved just as disappointing as all those other defeats in recent years. The day may have been, nay was, unusually sunny for Kelso in April but everything else was all too familiar as Kelso’s veterans proved too strong for the visitors.

Batting first, Kelso enjoyed a solid start to their innings before Henderson was dismissed by Jordan Reid. That brought Tim Wightman, Kelso’s new Australian all-rounder, to the crease to partner the evergreen Dougie Wilson and they set about the Selkirk bowling in no uncertain style. Wilson has caused trouble before; this was Wightman’s first opportunity to do so and he took full advantage of the opportunities afforded him before evntually, and all too late, being bowled by Michael Fenton. Wilson eventually fell too, to Kenny Paterson this time, but not before he’d made yet another half century against the Souters.

In reply, Selkirk’s innings got off to a poor start when Greg Fenton was run out and only Paterson was able to offer sustained resistance as the skipper, standing in for the absent Everitt, led a rearguard action on his way to 30. Despite leading by example, Paterson lacked sustained support as Selkirk’s prospects faded. Nor did the tail wag as enthusiastically as might have been hoped for. It was instead curtailed by another Kelso veteran as Stevie Patterson snaffled a hat-trick to finish with figures of 4 for 7 and round-off a comfortable Kelso victory in fine style.

Selkirk will look to bounce back against Hawick at Philiphaugh this Saturday.
